How to convert Unicode (??) mess into Hebrew characters?

Hi, and firstly a very big סליחה for not writing in עברית. It's a bit rusty, PLUS of course I'm not too familiar with the Hebrew keyboard. However, I'm trying to brush up a bit at the moment by watching some Israeli films. I've found subtitles in Hebrew for a few of them (all srt files), and some of them are fine, like this one here (just taking the first few lines (I guess you can have fun trying to figure out what film this is :~):

1
00:02:38,659 --> 00:02:40,327
?אתה לא מחכה למניין

2
00:03:45,061 --> 00:03:48,154
,יהי רצון מלפניך"
ה' אלוהינו ואלוהי אבותינו

3
00:03:48,354 --> 00:03:50,274
"...שייבנה בית המקדש במהרה"

However, most of the files that I've found look like this one:

1
00:02:24,493 --> 00:02:26,053
.âáøú ôìãîï

2
00:03:45,051 --> 00:03:47,131
,îø ôìãîï

3
00:03:47,211 --> 00:03:50,251
öø ìé, àáì àéï ìé ãøê ÷ìä
,ìåîø ìê ùäáï ùìê

I assume that this is maybe because the files were created on a system where Hebrew is the language of the OS, but honestly I don't know if that's the right assumption. It doesn't look like Unicode or anything like that, but I really have no idea. Anyway, !!לא חשובה הסיבה!! Does anyone have a nice clean suggestion for how to get that mess converted into the Hebrew characters?

Thanks very much in advance if anyone is able to help out :~)

This looks like there was a mistake with the character encoding while making the file.
If so, then (I think) this cannot be fixed.

If you go on the website to that subtitle page, check the preview.
Is the text in the preview correct Hebrew? Or the same jibber-jabber characters as in your forum post?
Or post a link to that specific subtitle you are talking about, so we can have a look.

if you are familiar with 'Subtitle Edit', then it's a 5 second job to get this done.

► Open messed-up SRT file into Subtitle Edit
► Select file encoding: UTF-8 with BOM (see screen, red marking)
(Left upper corner green marking) Choose Tab-File and next 'save as'
► Save as SRT file

Not familiar with freeware Subtitle Edit?

The problem is not with the srt file.
Change the encoding settings in the player for non unicode fonts.
In VLC, for example, under Tools > Preferences (Or ctrl+p) > subtitles/OSB > Default encoding >
Change to Hebrew (Windows 1225)
Hope that helps.

Which player?

What ever player you're using. I gave precise instructions for the VLC player as an example.
