is there a foss or open-source tool to check a subtitle file ?

Sun Dec 29, 2019 1:37 am

Is there an app. which looks at a subtitle file, let's say an srt file and tells the user if something is missing. Sometimes .srt file maybe transformed from an *.ass subtitle to *.srt using ffmpeg and am not sure how correct the file is or not. I know that mpv and many others are graceful that they drop those sequences which are perhaps of errors. But neither the viewer or the one who wants to contribute to a better subtitle can do nothing about it.

If there is somehting for that, please let know.

I think you will get far with Subtitle Edit. It Convert between SubRib, MicroDVD, Advanced Sub Station Alpha, Sub Station Alpha, D-Cinema, SAMI, youtube sbv, and many more (200+ different formats!)

If you open a faulty subtitle with Subtitle Edit, it will notify you of any found errors, I'm not sure if it logs them somewhere though. It will then try to correct those mistakes. Errors like overlapping are visible within the program with colours of problematic sentences.

Subtitle Edit is open source and splendid. 'Free gold to grab'.
You can grab it here: www.nikse.dk
