Well, actually the database has enough data for tagging almost all episodes it stores. The names for the movie files and for the subtitles should provide enough data for this. I outlined it before and in a related post.
The benefit of episode support in the API would benefit searching by season and episode (it's very common to have subs in the database that are not linked), like it's possible in TVSubtitles
I know the episode filename should more or less contain old the info, but parsing Name/SxE/Title is always a bit fuzzy, and there is always a good chance data will be misinterpreted. Thing is, I have all the data so I could properly link it.

Actually I could submit much more meta information like codecs, bitrate, fps, etc... but maybe i'm dreaming here :P

My program has parsed over 750 thousand tv series and movies so far according to my logs. I can't find a single false positive. I have shared here my routines.

It would also add an unnecessary complication, having people enter data where the data already exists in other sites and only needs being linked.

I guess it's a matter of what OpenSubtitles is for, to me. Adding tv episode info makes sense because each episode is its own movie and helps search & find. But it always needs to ensure uploading data is kept simple. This means keeping upload as it is now and parsing names to interpret.

argh, last message was not posted. anyway, TV series are coming, check it out, everything will be kept simple - uploading - parsing from filenames - splitting cds (it is not active now, now there is active splitting and parsing OLD TV subtitles).

if you will need some info here, and there, I mean xml, simplexml, xmlrpc methods, just let me know, I will slowly add those infos.

So after couple of years waiting, yeah, tv series are here.
