Can't download plugins (anymore) for Subtitle Edit

Tue Oct 23, 2018 11:43 am

I just did a big fix/cleanup on my 64-bits Windows 7 computer and reinstalled Subtitle Edit.
Then I tried to install the plugins I used to have before ( File > Plugins... > TAB Get Plugins > SELECT > BUTTON Download )
But it fails:

Image

No matter what I try:
- Different plugins
- Installing using the Windows installer
- Using the portable version
- Using version 3.3.15 (I am sure this version worked fine on my system, including plugins)
- Using version 3.5.3, 3.5.4, 3.5.5, 3.5.6, 3.5.7
- Trying installing SE and downloading a plugin on another computer (but also 64-bits Win7)

So I am now thinking that maybe it's not only me...

Can anybody confirm that downloading plugins is possible at all?
And/or anybody has some clue?

SE 3.5.6 / 3.5.7 works fine here... could you try to install latest .net 4.x framework and see how that works?
https://www.microsoft.com/net/download/ ... rk-runtime ?

(earlier versions of SE cannot download plugins due to some SSL/TLS upgrade on github servers)

Thanks for the confirm, bro.
Those two versions threw me an error at startup:

That's why I grabbed back to earlier versions (3.5.5 and lower don't have that problem).

Ah, The Creator himself :)
Pleased to meet you and thanks a zillion for some excellent piece of software!

Apparently I did not have the latest version of .NET 4.
Updating it to 4.7.2. using your link did the job.
Installed SE 3.5.7 - and that startup error is gone now.

Problem solved.
Yay! :D

Probably not...
Confirm.
I just tried it on an XP machine.
Not possible.

It will be difficult to get support for anything on XP... But you could try to use an older version of Subtitle Edit which does not need this high version of .NET. I am not sure if this would end up well and also not if this is the right way to go anyway. But you could try. SE is nicely made, installing and uninstalling is nice/easy/fast. You can try a bunch of versions in no time.

Have you seen this last post:

For some strange reason written by Nikolaj (the author of SE) but posted under your account :?
Anyway, the solution is in there.

and ad somehow in installation folder to work, "at force"?

I understand what you mean, that was my thinking when it didn't work for me.
I am afraid that the problem is not only to DOWNLOAD the files (without .NET) but moreover to USE them.
But try:

Here is a plugin to check line width: https://www.filedropper.com/showdownloa ... klinewidth (a .DLL file).
I THINK (but I am not sure for XP) it should go into the directory
~\Documents and Settings\$USER$\Application Data\Subtitle Edit\Plugins\

Obviously, change $USER$ to your Windows username.
No idea if 32-bits / 64-bits would be interfering. I just copied the file from my 64-bits system.

Btw, eeeeeh, have you considered upgrading your OS?
That might be a better path to walk...
