Help I'm new, can't paste the subtitles

I downloaded a movie and the subtitles, then i downloaded two programs (subtitle workshop and winsubtitler) and tried to paste the subtitles to the movie but I still can't see them when I use a dvd player, can anyone tell me what to do to add the captions to the movie with a free software and how? I mean I want to burn the movie with the subtitles to watch it in a dvd player at home, Thank you.
