Using the API to search by file name

Hello,
I've been using the XML-RPC API for a long time now.
In the past, I used file names as queries and got great results - similar to the normal web interface. Recently the results returned from the API are really different from the web interface.
For example, searching for the string via the web interface gets the correct result. Using the same string as query for the API returns some unrelated results.
I will appreciate any input or help!
