VLC is by far the most versatile media player put out. with all kinds of options including sub editing etc

Additionally Cyberlink PowerDVD is good to play uncommon movie filetypes.

I have VLC myself because it has a lot of options but the subtitles despite the fact that it has downloading from this site often works well.

on Linux (non-gnome/ubuntu):
mpv (player and backend to:)
SMPlayer
Mplayer (which can also be backend to smplayer)
VLC (previously mentioned)
kaffeine (very basic and ugly, but play files Nothing else will, eg. partial downloads, chunks, split files etc)

VLC is the only one you really need. Plays everything without problem and compatible with every codec/subtitle
