SubFlix: Please help BETA testing (Mac OS X)

Wed Aug 26, 2015 6:13 am

Hello,

I've created a new (free) program for automatically searching and downloading Subtitles. Compared to the currently available tools, it should work smarter in selecting the right subtitles, it is way faster, supports secure connections and much more. You can either drop in 1 or a complete directory tree with Videos and it will find the subtitles with your (multiple) preferred language(s) for you.

Right now, it's only for Mac OS X. However, I wrote it in a way that it is fairly easy to port to Windows and/or Linux. (I have no idea how many tools for Windows/Linux are already out there so if there's any interest, please let me know.)

It is so easy to use that I don't think it needs any explanation. However, check out the About box. It has some handy tips on shortcuts like tab'ing back and forth, open/show the video or subtitle in Finder etc. etc.

If you have any questions, suggestions, opinions, etc., feel free to reply here or PM/email me. But most important, I need your bug reports. :)

You can download SubFlix here: http://www.flixtools.com/tools#subflix

I hope you like it. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!
Marco

for all who got Mac OSX - test this program. I just love it, it is definitely the best what is on the market right now. If there will be UPLOAD FEATURE (and I believe it will be), this will be official program for OSX.

Test it - and you will see yourself.

Hi.

I noticed this is the "official" client for Open Subtitles. Where can suggestions be made for it? Currently it's missing a couple of essential things which make me unable to recommend it for a lot of my own users.

Hi, Marco.

Ah. Somehow I saw that the "SubFlix" link didn't work and thought OSS was referring to Flixtools. I just noticed it's supposed to be the same thing even though the name of the topic is misleading.

The comments I had referring flixtools were:

1.-Is there an official place to send feedback or should the forums be used?
2.-Is there a way for it to only download missing subtitles? Currently it says it won't overwrite "SRT" but subtitles can be in multiple formats and languages. I need to be able to drop a folder and have it search and download only missing subs.
3.-Is there a way to preview a subtitle? There's tons of mismatched subtitles in OSDB so being able to check the contents would be useful.
4.-For the same reason: Is there a way to modify a search manually? When hash doesn't work (I assume it uses hashes) and search is done by name because the database is incorrect (a common example is episode numbering, where the numbering is different), it's not possible to search for alternatives easily (I solved this in SolEol by pulling the proper season and episode from the hash and then searching for that IMDBID)
5.-OS limits that affect other clients seem to be ignored for Flixtools. Is this temporary or will it be how it works?

I haven't updated SolEol in a while and I'm considering recommending Flixtools for my users that want to use an alternative, but there's the stuff above that makes me hesitant, as they're used to those things already.

Hi Eduo,

Yes, the original version was called SubFlix but that was about a year ago. It became Open Subtitles - FlixTools. (Or just FlixTools) and it even has it's own Forum. :)
1.-Is there an official place to send feedback or should the forums be used?
Either [email protected], [email protected] or this forum. Whatever you think is best.
And yes... feedback is more than welcome.
2.-Is there a way for it to only download missing subtitles? Currently it says it won't overwrite "SRT" but subtitles can be in multiple formats and languages. I need to be able to drop a folder and have it search and download only missing subs.
No, not really but I can try to come up with something. The only issue I can think of is that a subtitle can be there as subtitle.srt or subtitle.en.srt. In the last case, I know the English subtitle is there already but I'm not sure how to handle things if you (for example) want both Spanish and English but there is already a file: subtitle.srt.
3.-Is there a way to preview a subtitle? There's tons of mismatched subtitles in OSDB so being able to check the contents would be useful.
That's on the Todo list but I'll move it up.
Under the file list, next to the + and - is a looking glass icon. If you click that, you'll open the manual search. See: https://forum.opensubtitles.org/viewtop ... 35&t=15723
5.-OS limits that affect other clients seem to be ignored for Flixtools. Is this temporary or will it be how it works?
I'm not sure what you mean with that. The 24hrs quota?
If you hover your mouse over your username at the bottom (in the current latest 2.1.4) you'll see how much quota you have left. If you've reached your quota for the day, the green/red connection dot in the lower right corner turns into a yellow triangle with a exclamation mark.
I haven't updated SolEol in a while and I'm considering recommending Flixtools for my users that want to use an alternative, but there's the stuff above that makes me hesitant, as they're used to those things already.
I understand. All I can recommend is to just try it out and if something is missing, let me know and I'll make it work somehow. :)
FlixTools is under active development and it currently has some additional features like auto sync suggestion, convert/add to iTunes etc. There is much more to come but it takes some time to build. Although some features are not active in the free version, the download and upload will always be available. I'm currently working on localizing into different languages and a Windows version is planned as well.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi Eduo,
2.-Is there a way for it to only download missing subtitles? Currently it says it won't overwrite "SRT" but subtitles can be in multiple formats and languages. I need to be able to drop a folder and have it search and download only missing subs.
No, not really but I can try to come up with something. The only issue I can think of is that a subtitle can be there as subtitle.srt or subtitle.en.srt. In the last case, I know the English subtitle is there already but I'm not sure how to handle things if you (for example) want both Spanish and English but there is already a file: subtitle.srt.
What I did in SolEol is t hash existing subs regardless. That way if when searching the hash comes up, I rename the existing one to the language it should have. If not, I ignore the existing subtitle and just download the languages selected.

I used existing hashes as well to try and get "better subs" (typical in popular shows, where the first subtitles are pretty bad but a week or so later better ones can be found). I made a setting to "Search Missing Subs" and "Search Better Subs". Both hash all existing subtitles. The first option doesn't replace existing language subs and renames existing ones if it can figure them out. The second option hashes all subs and sees if according to ranking algorithm results find a better hash than the existing one.

Some of this functionality broke when subtitle hashes started changing randomly due to publicity in them, but still works well enough to keep using it.
