OpenSubtitles.org API deprecation and end of life

Wed Jul 27, 2022 6:43 pm

Hi all developers.

update: api service will continue for VIP members: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18389

After 16 years of service, the time has come to turn off our original API service, to focus our time and energy on the new REST API. Read more about details and timing below.

Zillions of requests were served by the old xml-rpc API, but now we need to stop developing and servicing it. Instead our focus and development energy is moved towards modern, fast and better optimised OpenSubtitles.com REST API - which is already serving around 30 million requests per 24 hours.

Two years after our first deployment, it is quite stable and tested now. we invite you to try it and implement it in your app.

OpenSubtitles.org API important dates:

* 2022-06-15 registration of new user agents is stopped
* 2023-12-31 end of life, API endpoint will be turned off

Please make sure to perform necessary updates on your side and let us know if you need any assistance.

Check our new API here: https://www.opensubtitles.com/docs/api/html/index.htm

Thank you

Hello, the announced EOL is in a few weeks, and the new Rest API doesn't seem to support uploads. What can be done about this?

We will keep old API a bit longer, probably just supporting uploads.

Dear 'vankaelstej',
thanks for keep paying attention to your "Opensubtitles Uploader" child.

@ vankasteelj
Is there any change that you keep "Opensubtitles Uploader" alive, after 'a bit longer'?

Kind regards, Jan de Uitvreter

Hi,

What about keeping the old API alive (including downloads) for existing apps using it ?

Upgrading an app from the old to the new API is quite a lot of work, for not a lot of benefit (from the developer's POV).

Hi

well we have idea to abadon this old API long time ago, and we really need to move on. To keep two totally separate systems working...anyway, we will find out something, maybe allow old API just for VIP users or APPs which pays some fees, so everybody is happy.

What is the difference between these domains:
www.opensubtitles.org and www.opensubtitles.com?

.org is original old opensubtitles project.
.com is new project, which takes subtitles and knowledge from .org

use .com if possible, .org is in non-development mode.

Hi,

I'm using the .org api because my formuler does not accomodate the use of another subtitles source.

So I want do become a VIP member in order to keep using the .org api.

But is the use of the api garanteed or does it really end?

grtz Frank.

Hi
I found article, that formuler is supporting inserting credentials:

https://formulerusa.com/whats-mytvonline2/

so yeah, it should work, and old API will be around for some time for sure. Uploads are not yet finished on new API, so I guess we have time. Also dont forget when you become .org VIP you will be automatically .com VIP also.

Hi

It worked for years.
Now I have to become a VIP member.
That's ok by me, but.…

I cannot change from the .org to another.
So that is my concern.

Should I be concerned?

Grtz Frank

Hi

you mean program you are using is not supporting .com ? If thats the issue, contact the developers of that program.

API on .org will work until...majority will move to new api on .com, so no need to be concerned, I believe it will take few years...
