What program to use to download subs

Mon May 02, 2016 3:11 am

Hi, I found this page:

https://trac.opensubtitles.org/projects ... msUsingAPI

with the list of program that use the open subtitles database. I tried a bunch, but they are all crap. So instead of trying blindly, I would like to ask other users which one works. So far I tried:

-SubDownloader: Untold number of bugs, crashes, limits, etc
-Atlas Subtitler: The installer doesn't install the program, doesn't even have the data
-Opensubtitles downloader: besides many interface problems, it saves subtitles with names different that the file's name.
-Periscope: not for Windows (the list doesn't even tell that)

I count 69 links, and I really don't want to try one by one, especially if other people did it already. Please, can you pin me one that works on Windows, doesn't bug, doesn't have ads, saves subtitles with their proper name, and doesn't have any other shit that maybe I forgot to include in this list but should be obvious? Like for example, I don't know, being able to select a given language or, again, not to give stupid error messages and freeze, like the SubDownloader is famed to do?
Thanks

I really don't get it.

I tried the first program, I selected a folder, and Soleol downloaded 1/3 of the needed subs. The files are from a very common series and I'm sure each episode count dozens of subs, and yet it didn't work. I verified, and all the episodes have countless subs available. I tried to download them through a different program, Bsplayer, and it worked. Too bad that Bsplayer can't read the video of recent codecs and handles files one at a time, otherwise I would stick with it. I tried a second time, and Soleol downloaded yet another small bunch of subs, covering almost half of the episodes, but that was it. Run it again and again didn't yield any more subs.

Then I tried the second program. Just the installation was a problem, but after a while I managed to make it work. Or actually, I didn't. You see, I managed to install the program, it's just that the program doesn't work. I went to the subtitles' section, I tried to select a folder, and the program tells me I have to log in on a specific site, opensubtitles.org . There are many websites with subs catalogs, I don't see way it forces me to use this particular one. Even so, I don't see why I'd had to subscribe, or give my password to the program, or even log in to download subs available to the general public, but then again it's not like I had a choice. So I entered the log in information, just to see another message error that reads "401 Unauthorized", whether I am currently logged in with my browser to the website or logged out. Again, a fail.

Do you have, out of this 69 programs, one that actually works?

I guess making an interface for https://github.com/vankasteelj/opensubtitles-api would only take a few minutes/hours. If someone is interrested, contact me and we can partner. You have to know HTML and CSS at least, Javascript could be good, and Node to be perfect.

On OSX I can say Flixtools works great. For windows (well...), try OSCAR: http://oscar.dunres.sk/ (beta version - actually not even sure if this is working - report please) - I thought SubDownloader works great, also SolEol should work. If you can not get subtitle file for some movie, it is possible, that we dont have moviehash for it.

This seems nice too https://github.com/tvdburgt/subtle/releases

Check list of programs also here
http://blog.opensubtitles.eu/category/programs

Then there are some command line tools, like periscope

There must be at least 1 program, which you like, we got more than 1200 user agents registered already

Also it seems you dont understand, how it is working. To get right subtitles for your movies, we are using moviehash. So it is sometimes possible, that subtitle is on website, but not "in program". Also, when you have to login in program, it means, you have to login in program, and not in browser.

But of course, if you can not find program, which you like, internet is big...let us know then, which you liked the most

Sorry, I don’t know any of that.

I understand how the difference. But:

1 - You shouldn’t need to log in to download subs. Not only it’s stupid to ask to log in on opensubtitles.org to download subs, but you CAN do it without log in with other programs, like Bsplayer, SubDownloader, Opensubtitles downloader and Soleol.
2 - I DID insert my username and password in the program (Filebot), but it didn’t work and it gives me an error message: "401 Unauthorized".
There must be at least 1 program, which you like
I will take anything provided it works.
If you can not get subtitle file for some movie, it is possible, that we dont have moviehash for it.
You do have moviehash on opensubtitles.org for the episodes I want, I verified with Bsplayer. It’s just Soleol that doesn’t see them.
try OSCAR: http://oscar.dunres.sk/ (beta version - actually not even sure if this is working - report please)
I just tried Oscar, and that one too, doesn’t work. I opened the program, loaded a folder with videos, it sees subs for almost all of them (but not all), and then…

OSDb: Downloading subtitles, part 1/1 ...

OSDb: DownloadSubtitles: exception <!DOCTYPE html>

</body>
</html>

Failed to download selected subtitle files ...

I added my log in information (again, it’s stupid to include this feature, it’s not necessary, and anyway doesn’t make it work) for no use.
I even tried to add manually other servers: http://bsplayer-subtitles.com http://getsubtitle.com http://subtitles.com.br simply because I can see that Bsplayer use them and they work. But it doesn’t seem to connect to any of them.

Oscar doesn’t work.

that 503 error message is problem with server, not with oscar. try again.

for now, we dont require login for download or upload subtitles. But it is useful, for example for activating VIP benefits, see here:
http://www.opensubtitles.org/en/support#vip

and also it is good to have track which subtitles you downloaded, so you can vote, so you can make our service better. But as I know, nowhere it is mandatory.

http://bsplayer-subtitles.com http://getsubtitle.com http://subtitles.com.br uses different API and it is not compatible with opensubtitles.org

Did you tried drag and drop your MOVIE file to Movie Search (green input box) on www.opensubtitles.org ?

I don’t understand. You mean the server of http://www.opensubtitles.org ? I tried again and it gives me the same error message.
http://bsplayer-subtitles.com http://getsubtitle.com http://subtitles.com.br uses different API and it is not compatible with opensubtitles.org
I don’t know what you mean with “not compatible with opensubtitles.org”. What I did is to write those addresses in tabs Preferences->Servers in Oscar, once spelling the addresses like that, and once adding the characters “api.” and “:80/xml-rpc” like the URL in the default tab for Opensubtitles. I don’t know what that means, I just tried.
But whenever I manually add a tab in Preferences->Servers, whatever I write, the whole program refuses to work, and doesn’t search for subs in opensubtitles.org either, it simply shows the error message:

OSDb: no session, please login first

Search: failed with error no session, please login first

So I deleted any manually added tab. Still, Oscar doesn’t download anything.
Did you tried drag and drop your MOVIE file to Movie Search (green input box) on http://www.opensubtitles.org ?
First, it’s not a movie but a folder with many episodes. That’s why I want a program that handles hundreds of files at a time. Second, if you mean drag and drop a single video in the opensubtitles.org ’s homepage inside the browser, what happens is that the browser (Firefox) tries to play the file, displaying only the audio and not the images ‘cause apparently it doesn’t recognize the codec.

I still didn't find a single program who works.

Hi, for drag and drop, please check this
http://blog.opensubtitles.eu/opensubtit ... rop-search

the thing is, if it finds subtitle file, the subtitle file SHOULD be found also in program you are using. This is for simple verification

OSCAR - I didnt use it quite long time (I am not longer Windows user), but I guess, it should work, maybe someone else can confirm this

You can not insert other servers in programs, which support opensubtitles.org. BSPlayer support other servers, because they copy our subtitles to their and other servers, but implements other API

Did you tried OpenSubDownloader ?

If it can not find some subtitles, download them manually or in other way and UPLOAD them back top OPENSUBTITLES using program, so we will got link between moviehash and subtitle.

read here how it works: https://trac.opensubtitles.org/projects ... /wiki/OSDb

Many people use our API and they get millions of subtitles each day, during peak hours we got 30.000 users online, so I believe they found program which they like.

FileBot requires you to login with your OpenSubtitles account to limit abuse. Also, it'll increase your daily download quota which will save you trouble down the road.

Nope, the browser plays the video. Actually, the audio of the video.
the thing is, if it finds subtitle file, the subtitle file SHOULD be found also in program you are using. This is for simple verification
Again, subs of files whose hash are on the opensubtitles.org are found by Bsplayer, but not by (at least) Opensubtitles downloader or Soleol. But that was yesterday, ‘cause today Soleol crashes as soon as I load a folder. Granted, is a different folder, with different files, but still, I’d appreciate if it worked.
OSCAR - I didnt use it quite long time (I am not longer Windows user), but I guess, it should work, maybe someone else can confirm this
I do confirm it: it doesn’t work.
You can not insert other servers in programs, which support opensubtitles.org. BSPlayer support other servers, because they copy our subtitles to their and other servers, but implements other API
And what’s the obstacle in creating a program that handles your API and, in parallel, the other servers’ API?
Did you tried OpenSubDownloader ?
I did, and it’s the worst crap ever. Like the other programs I tried it doesn’t work, but on top of that it tries to speculate on YOUR work (and mine), and in order to do that includes malware in the software (DRM, limits, etc.). Even the cracked copy I got from a torrent doesn’t do the job. Years ago I tried it and back then I managed to have it work, sort of, but it was annoying because of the interface and useless because of the limit, and I simply continued to use Bsplayer. Bsplayer required to open one by one each episode, but at least it worked, and handled several servers. Now, again, I want to replace it because Bsplayer can’t read the last codecs, and although it still CAN download subs like before, if it can’t display the images of a video it doesn’t do it automatically, and I have to open several menus and submenus to order it to search for subs.
If it can not find some subtitles, download them manually
I don’t want to do that manually, that’s why you have programs (at least in theory), and anyway manual browsing compares the typed titles and not the hash.
FileBot requires you to login with your OpenSubtitles account to limit abuse. Also, it'll increase your daily download quota which will save you trouble down the road.
I don’t like to log in, I don’t like for servers to require log in, I don’t like daily quotas, I don’t like those quotas to increase, and anyway you DON’T NEED to log in in order to check subs availability or download them. Finally, I tried to log in through programs that require it, and they don’t work. None of them.

I understand that, but:

- Are you involved in the making of OpenSubDownloader? If I suggest some changes, can you make them?

- Do you know a program that currently works?

- Do you know why those programs that require log in can't log in?

I am website developer, I didn't develop any of those programs. They use API which I develop. The best is to get in touch with developers - dont forget, they often do this free of charge. Many time are programs open sourced, so if you don't like something, just take the source codes and make a change (and better world)

For Filebot, you got answer already from author, why you must be authenticated to do something.

I dont know if some other programs require log in, but probably not.

Hi, do you know how to prevent firefox to play (or try to) a media file with drag and drop and do what suggested? Obviously, I looked on internet, and didn't find a solution.
