Re: Opensubtitles.org now blocked (at least) from Denmark

In answer to SmallBrother - "Have you tried to access the website http://www.opensubtitles.org with a browser and find/download subs manually? Does that work?"

When I clicked on the link I was taken to here....... https://rettighedsalliancen.dk/wp-conte ... ime-EN.pdf. :(
Okay, so same same, looks like they went over-active and took care of whole opensubtitles. And looks like they are using some combination of things.

Btw, I am wondering if this redirecting to some PDF is legal. Because court order says they should BLOCK, not hi-jack the content. I would say this is hacking, computer criminality. But hey, I am not a lawyer ;-)
I can just about manage VPN on Opera on my laptop.....
And what happens there if you use this to go to opensubtitles?
but I would have no idea how to open a streaming app on my phone using VPN to try any different methods to get subs. :/
If you set up a VPN, you just connect to that VPN server. Now that VPN server is connecting to the site you want, instead of you directly. For you, the end result is that you notice nothing, except that things work again as they should :)

Hi SmallBrother.

Are you guys using Cloudflare?
I think it may be a thing with Cloudflare.

I've tried using 3-4 different danish ISP's and all are blocked.

If I were you, I would contact cloudflare and ask them if they know whats going on. The ruling is only for TDC (A danish ISP) to implement a DNS blocker, so I don't think Cloudflare should implement this filter.

The forum here is not blocked by this filter.

The reason for people saying that it might be because of DNS is that previously the blocking was a simple DNS filter which was given the ISP's. This was easy to circumvent simply by using cloudflare or googles DNS. But this seems like a very different approach.

The network trace looks like this:

http://opensubtitles.org/ => 301 Location: http://www.opensubtitles.org/
http://www.opensubtitles.org/ => 302 location: https://tinyurl.com/dk-court
https://tinyurl.com/dk-court => 301 location: https://rettighedsalliancen.dk/wp-conte ... ime-EN.pdf

Opensubtitles is the one doing the redirect. SSL is not broken, and you are redirected even when going around cloudflare and connecting directly to the server.

So, probably not much to do about this, except use a VPN or proxy.

Proofie:
curl -k -v -H Host:www.opensubtitles.org https://92.240.234.122/
...
< Location: https://tinyurl.com/dk-court
...

curl -k -v -H Host:www.opensubtitles.org https://92.240.234.122/addons/show_my_ip.php
...
Global (system) download limit: 200 per 24 hours
Detected IP(s): <b>Array</b>

So cloudflare is not doing anything. Also, since show_my_ip works, and / does not, and SSL is not broken there are only two options.

Danish ISP's have both cloudflares and opensubtitles globalsign certificate. Or opensubtitles are the ones doing the blocking. Option one is ludicrous, so option 2 it is.

My post just got removed, so I'll try again.

OpenSubtitles are the ones doing the blocking. SSL is not broken and both cloudflare and the direct server IP does the redirect, but only on /, not on for example /addons/show_my_ip.php

Check it yourself:
curl -k -v -H Host:www.opensubtitles.org https://CLOUDFLAREorDIRECTIP/addons/show_my_ip.php
curl -k -v -H Host:www.opensubtitles.org https://CLOUDFLAREorDIRECTIP/

The only possible way to do this redirect is from the server.

Site admins, do you agree? Is it Opensubtitles itself doing the redirection, so that Cloudflare is only mirroring what you Opensubtitles.org itself is sending pre-cache?

When governments are involved, nothing is ludicrous and I can imagine anything ;-)
Option 2 is saying that opensubtitles makes a web site and then stops people from accessing it. That would be a bit silly.

No posts were removed. I just declined your second post, which was basically duplicate of the one a bit before. Keep in mind that forum posts need to be approved manually by an admin first, so it can take some time. Please only submit once and have patience.

I am not so sure about that. Or maybe the conclusion is correct, but maybe not the statements your conclusion is based upon.
For example, if there is some hi-jack somewhere and traffic is lead to a DIFFERENT server, then on THAT (fake) server the redirect can be made. But I agree, since we are talking SSL and also opensubtitles' DNSSEC is configured correctly, I wouldn't know how to do it. But this is getting complicated, I think I would need a couple of red bulls first.

Site admins are nothing more than moderators. They don't have insight in the actual server configuration and so. Only the server administrator would be able to answer your question. For now, I cannot image opensubtitles is breaking their own creation.

I agree, that seems highly unlikely.

I'd say the culprit is RettighedsAlliancen.
Don't ask me how they're doing it, but it seems they are doing it. With success.

In Denmark, local anti-piracy group RettighedsAlliancen has a similar goal and they are starting to make progress. The outfit is actively building a piracy “disruption machine” that tackles the issue from as many sides as it can.

Currently, all major ISPs in Denmark have agreed to implement the IWL in their systems based on a joint Code of Conduct. This means that all the ISPs jointly will block their customers access to infringing services thus amplifying the impact of a blocking order by magnitudes.

RettighedsAlliancen also believes other tools and services could join in. Browser plugins could use the IWL to identify illegal sites, for example, and the options are endless.

Danish ISP's are not blocking it, not just because that would be impossible with the way SSL works, but also because I work for a danish ISP, and I have verified that we are not blocking it, yet the redirect happens on our IP's anyway.

It's a simple geoip lookup on the site redirecting danish IP's.

Maybe ask the system administrator instead? I don't know why they choose to block it, but I assume the danish antipirate entity just sent them the PDF and asked them to, and they didn't want any trouble.

In the meanwhile somebody has sent me a PM, accusing me/us of being a liar and the I/we should just admit that we are doing it ourselves.

Let me be clear: I didn't deny OS is doing this. I said I cannot imagine. And I said I don't know what's going on, because I dont know what's going on. That's not the same as lying.

Check out the previous post by Mazrim_Taim. Could it maybe be that the person you verified with maybe doesn't know everything? Or is maybe not telling the whole truth? The Danish ISP is under some court order. I can imagine this ISP is forced or intimidated to further shut up about it, or maybe they just figured it is smarter. It wouldn't be the first time. Please note: this is not an accusation, just my imagination of a theoretical possibility.

Sure, that's possible. Let's wait for the person in charge to confirm, deny, or remain silent.

Meanwhile, instead of speculating about who/why/how/etc., I think it would be better to find a solution for our Danish users.

Speaking of which: have you tried the www.opensubtitles.com website? It is still in beta phase, and I don't know if it would work for API use, but it could be a solution and at least worth the try.

Are you saying I'm lying to myself? I work in a technical capacity at an ISP, and I have personally verified that we perform no other blocking than DNS on your URL (which would be impossible for the reasons mentioned before). I really can't tell if you are trolling, or just not knowledgeable about the technology. But why even comment then, if you don't know how SSL works?

In psychology this is called "projection" ;-)

I can confirm that http://www.opensubtitles.com is not blocked here from Denmark.

But the Kodi opensubtitles plugin uses http://www.opensubtitles.org, so that doesn't help me much. I've confirmed that http://www.opensubtitles.org does work with a VPN, and so I'm planning to install a VPN client in OpenELEC/Kodi: [URL removed by SmalBrother] . But honestly, I'll wait a week or so to see if this can't be resolved, saving me the hassle.

The redirect is ( or seems to be) done by some entity with access to opensubtitles.org's SSL private key (which no Danish ISPs have), so I'm hopeful we'll get wiser in the next couple of days.

I'll sit tight and use http://www.opensubtitles.com manually in the meantime... :-)

Edit SmallBrother:
Although the link you provided offers a tutorial how to do it, it's full of advertisement, so I have removed that link.
As soon as I have the time for it, I will provide the same tutorial without advertisements.

Well, why not post it here, so we can make/keep OpenSubtitles our home :) It won't be a one month's job and I suppose it would serve some people.

I just have a problem with people saying "We recommend VPN provider X because they are the best". They should say "We recommend VPN provider X because they give us the highest referral fee". Check out their links and their off-focus pop up...
I also have a VPN provider to recommend (including a referral link, if you wish - HA). But I would recommend them, because I fully trust their technique AND their honesty, which is at least as important. Never mind that their referral fees suck :)
