Suggestions about the website and the app (OSDownloader)

Sun Feb 25, 2018 1:45 am

So, first of all some problems I had with the app :
- It rarely downloads synched subs
- It often downloads HI subs even though I don't want those

Some suggestions about how to fix those :
- Add a checkbox "Download hearing impaired subs" so we can opt out
- Download subs based on filename ... which I think it's supposed to do ? But it doesn't work correctly since for example
"Vikings.S04E06.What.Might.Have.Been.1080p.WEB-DL.DD5.1.H.265-LGC" gets the correct
"Vikings.S04E06.What.Might.Have.Been.1080p.WEB-DL.DD5.1.H.265-LGC" subs, but
"Vikings.S04E10.The.Last.Ship.1080p.WEB-DL.DD5.1.H.265-LGC" gets a weird
"Vikings.S04E10.The.Last.Ship.1080p.WEB.eng" instead of the LGC subs which I made sure are available on the website. So it needs to be more consistent.
- Another option is to allow the user to opt out of automatic downloads which for me have often failed at delivering the correct subtitles and instead bring out a list of all the subs, and allow the user to very easily choose the one he wants and have it downloaded and placed in the movie file's folder. I believe this is really needed since even with perfect automatic downloads there are bound to be errors, since for examples some subs are not marked as HI but actually HI (human error).

Now, for the website, I just for some reason really dislike the design. It appears cluttered, messy and requires too many actions. This is what actually pushed me away from opensubtitles for a long time before I came back after not being able to find any good alternatives.
Let me give you a few examples :
- When filling the search form, you can't type the language name, instead you have to scroll through this narrow and tiny list
- When you search for a specific season or episode for some reason every other season/episode is raw text with no link, which seems like an unnecessary limitation which will require you to search a second time if you're done watching and want subs for the next episode for example
- From the general sub list (like https://www.opensubtitles.org/en/ssearch/sublanguageid-eng/idmovie-136683) if you want to download a sub from an episode, you have to click the episode's link, then choose the subtitle from a small list which is too small to display the full name for most subs (https://i.imgur.com/57L456V.png) then click Download on another page where it's actually easier to read the sub list (https://i.imgur.com/p2SlO8X.png), which mind you can only be found if you scroll past some useless clutter which does not add much for most people (https://i.imgur.com/ZSNSy9u.png). And then you have to wait for the download because it redirects you to another page with a countdown. It's annoying.
If it could be as simple as click the episode's link, get a nice easy to read list (like the 2nd screenshot) and click the sub's name before the file gets downloaded, it'd be way better imo.

So, in a general sense, a more straightforward design and fewer clicks to get what you want would in my opinion benefit the site and bring more traffic. Also, a "clean" design, that is with as few information as possible is in my opinion the best (for anything, websites, apps, video game UIs). Look at this french subs website that I found https://www.sous-titres.eu/series/vikings.html, you'll understand what I'm talking about when I say as few information as possible.

Thanks for reading, hope my feedback proves useful.
