The format changes if you change the site language, using the link in the top right corner of the screen:

For example, change it to German and you will get the German style format: 25.09.2017
Change it to Dutch and you will get for example 25-09-2017

But changing the site language means I wouldn't be able to parse, use the site as I want, that defeats the whole idea. What would be better, if possible is in the profile corner, there is an option to play/set dates giving 2-3 of the commonest ways both of dd-mmm-yy and mmm-dd-yy.

True, I understand.
I am Dutch, but I have set the site language to English. Sometimes those dates are confusing, but I managed to live with it.
But this would be an idea for the coder to add an option like that in the profile page/settings.
