what to do with defective anonymous subtitles?

Mon Feb 27, 2017 4:54 am

I was just wondering...
I found a defective subtitle. By defecrive I mean a lot of lines like:

244
00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:15,000
**************
345
00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:21,000
*******

346
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:31,000
********

First of all, I think this SHOULD NOT EXIST in Opensubtitles because it is easily detectable and corectable. It is a job for the admins and not for users. But there it is. We are not talking here about bad punctuation or translation but bad format.
When it's owned by someone the action is to upload a correct version of the file. Sometimes I just request ownership. But this time is different because I don't speak the language in the subtitle. I think it would be awkward that I own a file that I don't understand so I can't correct or improve it (I mean, translation and timings)

@hector

There is nothing wrong with these subtitles, except some too long lines and some short subtitle lines duration. There are no defective lines! (http://www.opensubtitles.org/en/subtitl ... of-fire-cs)
Maybe you gave a wrong URL link?
You just have to mark with a sign (mark subtitles as bad) a bad subtitles so that the admins can check it out and edited it. Google translate or bad or defective subtitles are deleted.

Subs number 1442 and 1443 are joined at line 6338. Same for subs 1662 and 1663 at 7289. No blank line.
Besides there are several places where there are 2 consecutive blank lines: 131, 331, 1009, 1359...
I don't think the latter is a problem for any player but the fiormer is usually rendered as one (lousy) subtitle.

There are very few things more simple than the SRT subtitle format. It's not so difficult to do it right. These mistakes can only be done editing by hand.

But the main thing, I think, is that OS should check uploads and not allow these lousy subtitles.

You mean to say that this subtitle has technical errors. It is not checked for errors by the translator. Maybe he did not know how, or did not use any translation software, but he just changed the English transcript to Czech. I fixed the technical error in the subtitle. Now it's probably ok.

Thanks. But that's the point. How could you fix it? If you are not the uploader you can't upload a new version, can you?

Technical errors (such as lines without letters, bad values, to long duration etc... ) can be repaired with adequate OCR Script in programs for subtitles such as Subtitle Workshop or Subtitle Edit.

if you are admin, you can update the subtitles.

There is simple regular expression to check validity of subtitles, if we would make it more strict, many of subtitles would not pass, which on one side is good thing, on another side not so good.

30 years ago we had only 2 TV channels. Now we have more than 100. One half of it is rubbish (in my opinion). And the other half hardly reaches in its entirety the value of only one of the old. Honestly, I prefer the old days. I prefer just two quality channels to 100 crappy ones.

In this particular case, when this is the only subtitle available in its language I guess it could be accepted. But again, it is easily detectable and therefore correctable:

[[:alpha:].]\n[[:digit:]]+$ --> not valid

Because I can't, I'm not an admin. Am I wrong?
Last time I tried I think I wasn't allowed to upload a new version.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. Why didn't you say that in the first place? :-)
