wikitle.com down

Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:57 am

The subtitles wiki site wikitle.com (ex wikisubtitles.net) has been suspended by the host. Here are the mirrors: http://www.wikisubtitles.enpuertoplata.com
http://www.addic7ed.com

discussion (in Spanish): http://www.seriesgringas.org/2008/10/about-wikitle.html

edit 2008-10-17:
addic7ed has also been taken down by the host.
tvsubtitles.net seems down as well (Plesk default page), does anyone know why?

For those who want the gory details and speak Spanish, there's a discussion on ultimonivel.net. Wikitle was taken down because of a very generic email from some "copyright agency". Other sites got the same email but chose to ignore it. Wikitle published its source code, so now there are a number of clone sites. The most active ones seem to be
http://subtitulos.es and
http://subswiki.com

And there are rumours about some wikitle people spamming the clone sites because they're envious now. What a kindergarten

The problem with all those wikis is that they're almost only used for Spanish subtitles and for TV series. It's not a limitation of the software, but of the community that is using them. I really like the idea of a subtitles wiki. I wish there were a really international wiki for series and movie subtitles. I already suggested a wiki or versioning system for opensubtitles some time ago, but I know it would be a major undertaking.

(And tvsubtitles.net is back, but it's not a wiki.)

Addic7ed is also back... and we have English subtitles .. in most of the website.

For those that know, if you had an account on wikisubtiles, you also have one here. We have the same database wikisubtitles used to have.

addic7ed.com is the website.

Enjoy your movies and subtitles... no matter where they come from :)

Cheers

Now, the *NICE* thing to do would be to *SHARE* those subtitles with OpenSubtitles.

The best thing about wikititles (and addic7ed, by extension) is the versioning system. The continuous evolution of subtitles until they're perfect.

The worst thing about wikititles is, sadly, the wiki itself. The interface is designed for human browsing and it's hard to automate it or use a client or API.

If OS and addic7ed could strike a deal and exchange data (and, while at it, other wikititles clones communicate so there is a single database of subtitles, even if there are several wikis) it would be ideal.

When one downloaded subtitles they'd be the latest version and if I redownloaded one with a newer date it'd be assured to be better than a past one.

That, of course, would mean selflessly sharing information and that's pretty uncommon in the already grey legal area subtitle creation and sharing imply.
