I think you should download the subtitles separately before using VLC. Normally I use VLC to add the subtitles to the same folder and it will automatically use it.

You use the expand technique and it will list all the subtitles for you. I had the same problem before but then solved it this way.

With your request, I think you should find an application to watch movies, it will be better.
