Subtitles in Japanese show up as empty boxes

I am not sure what the problem is but the subtitles show up as a series of small empty boxes.
I have downloaded the Japanese language pak for Windows and do not have problems viewing Japanese characters.
I am using VLC Media player. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks, I did not know that I had to change the font. It worked.
